Portland teacher, students help develop Advanced Placement Black studies course that will spread nationwide
Subject
Maurice Cowley; Advanced Placement; Black Studies Course
Description
In Maurice Cowley’s second floor social studies classroom at McDaniel High School, the topic for the day is formidable: integration, transatlantic abolitionism and belonging in pre-Civil War America.
His students wrestle with the nuanced decisions facing some Black Americans of the time: Give up on a gravely flawed country and begin again, in Central America, a Caribbean island or even Africa? Or stay in the cities of the frosty North and the towns of the fractured South and try to cajole or force the nation towards equity and an honest reckoning with the past?
