Photographer of iconic Tougaloo Nine picture donates camera to MDAH

Jerry W. Keahey Sr. donated to MDAH the camera he used to document life on the campus of Tougaloo College during his time as a student. Images taken with the camera include several group photographs of the Tougaloo Nine, student activists who attempted to integrate the Jackson Municipal Library in 1961.
A photograph of the Tougaloo Nine taken by Keahey is featured prominently in A Tremor in the Iceberg gallery at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
“My hope is that the camera, the accessories, and the pictures will be added to the Tougaloo Nine display you have now at the museum,” said Keahey.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History collects and preserves the archival resources of the state, including official government records, books and manuscripts related to Mississippi history, personal papers, newspapers, newsfilm, audio recordings, photographs, and more. These materials are available to the public free of charge at the William F. Winter Archives and History Building, on the corner of North and Amite Streets in downtown Jackson. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. For more information call 601- 576-6850.
