Here’s why Cincinnati is installing an Ezzard Charles statue

First came the man, Ezzard Charles.
Over time came a stamp, a book, a mural, a school, a street and a park bearing the name of the famous Cincinnati boxer.
On Saturday, the Cincinnati Parks Foundation will install its long-awaited sculpture of the man known as the Cincinnati Cobra.

“We believe in this project because it’s about social equity,” said Jennifer Hafner Spieser, executive director of the Cincinnati Parks Foundation. “It came from this idea of ‘Let’s raise this piece of beautiful art,’ and it grew into much more.”
Already, the park has four benches, up from one, with dozens of new donated trees. Come Oct. 1, it will be the home of the statue and home base for a multimedia telling of Charles’ life.
